Petra Lindqvist audits obsolete deep-space relays for a living, closing out hardware nobody remembers building. When she is assigned to retire Compton Relay, a forty-year-old station still listening for a research vessel lost near the heliopause, she finds a scheduling anomaly that shouldn’t exist: a wait condition, written into the relay’s core by its original engineer, that keeps resetting itself every time it is about to expire.
