Corwin Marsh draws the floorplan before he writes the first sentence. "Nine Rooms in Vellsted House" was built room by room over one winter, and each room was finished — furniture, sightlines, what can be heard through the wall — before its chapter was drafted. He is interested in houses as arguments rather than as atmosphere.
