Two strangers are hired to coax sound back into a silent organ, and it keeps finding the wrong words for both of them.

When the deconsecrated chapel of St. Osyth’s is handed to a heritage trust for restoration, pipe voicer Nell Kerrigan is brought in to revive its 1891 Hastings & Sons organ — an instrument silent for thirty years and slated, if she fails, to be gutted for an electronic substitute. She is not supposed to like the trust’s restoration architect, Julian Ferro, a man who treats the building like a patient and the budget like a scalpel. Over a winter of scaffolding, tuning forks, and a hundred small arguments about what a thing is allowed to sound like once it’s been broken, they find out how much of restoration is actually about learning to listen.
